Chitsva chiri mutsoka! This Shona saying translates to when you travel, you see and experience new things. Which is the best thing about living or visiting another country. I have learnt a lot about tolerance, being the different one, minding my own business and other people’s cultures. Because Bermuda has a large expat community from all over the world, I have learnt a lot more than I expected.
There is a large Caribbean community in Bermuda, I guess because of the proximity. What I have observed is that the islands have as many similarities as they do differences especially when it comes to the food. I will say though, I have eaten more Jamaican food than from any other island. I love it. Unlike Zimbabwean food, food from the Caribbean Islands is slow cooked with a lot of herbs and peppers. This gives the food a lot of depth in flavour and just general yummy goodness.
While doing some research, I came across this Caribbean green seasoning. From my research each island has its own blend. I use scallions, red pepper, red onion, thyme, cellery, cilantro, garlic and jalapeno peppers. From the first time I tried this, I loved it. I make a jar or two to last me a month. I use it in my stews and on fish. It is my secret recipe.
I dice everything and put in the blender and blend away.
