About two weeks ago, a reader sent me an email asking how she could start sewing and if I had any recommendations for sewing machines. I will make this a two part series, next week I will give you some places to look for inspiration for your projects.
I put together this beginner’s sewing kit that you can start with. You can buy all these things new but try thrift shops and second hand places too.
Sewing Machine
Get a sewing machine that suits your sewing level. For beginners I would suggest this Brother machine.
It is easy to set up and use as well. You can buy it on-line, but I would suggest buying in a shop where you will be able to take it for repairs and maintenance.
Spare Needles
When you get the sewing machine it will have needles but you will also need spare needles incase the ones you have break. You also need to change your needles often,it helps in maintaining your machine
Hand Sewing Needles
You will need these for basting and finishing your work.
Thread and Thread Holder
Buy sewing thread in different colours to use on your projects
Bobbins
Buy extra bobbins and keep them wound with thread that you use regularly.
Buttons
Keep a variety of buttons that you can use on different projects. I get some really nice ones at the thrift shop.
Pins and Pin Cushion
Get glass head pins because they are easy to grab. Remember to use your pin cushion and not your mouth to hold the pins.
Seam Ripper
We all make mistakes so you will need this to correct them
Tape Measure
Remember to measure twice and cut once
Fabric Scissors
Buy sharp fabric scissors and NEVER use them on paper.
Paper Scissors
Use these scissors for cutting out patterns.
Iron and ironing board
Get a good iron for your sewing and I suggest getting a separate ironing board for your sewing projects as well. I have read that a Rowenta iron is the best but I dont have the budget for it.
Fabric Marker
Get an air soluble fabric marker.
Sewing Table and Chair
If your budget allows get a sewing table and chair that is comfortable for you and your back.
Printer
You can find a lot of patterns that you can download on-line either for free or for purchase which you can print at home.
Fabric
Get some pretty fabric and build your stash. Check out thrift stores as well as the remnants bin at the fabric shop especially for small projects.
