This black bean burger is the best burger I have ever had. Period!
Once in a while I want a burger especially on the few occasions that we eat out. I usually want to eat food that I otherwise would not eat at home when I eat out. This year we are trying to eat less red meat so we are eating more turkey, chicken and fish. I personally don’t mind vegetarian food especially if I am making it all myself. I don’t really like meat substitutes. All I will be thinking about is how I am eating someone’s experiment on how to make soy taste like meat with a lot of chemicals, salt and sugar.
I made this black bean burger and I fell in love with it. It is actually better than any meat burger I have had. It is so moist. You know how the banana makes banana bread super moist, it is exactly what happens with this. Believe me you will not miss the meat.
To make this you will need to mash the beans and all the other ingredients to it.
The best thing about this better is the Cheeky Chilli Peri Peri Sauce. If there was test on Zimbabweaness, this sauce along side with Mazoe Orange Crush would be there. I added a few splashes of it in the burger. Then I made the patties. My husband does not do vegetarian anything so I froze the extra patties. Whenever I feel like having one for lunch I just thaw and cook it thouroughly. To freeze, place each patty on parchment paper and freeze without covering for 2 hours and then place in a container.
I cook the burger on medium low to allow the burger to be heated through.
Black Bean Burger
Ingredients
- 2 cans 14,5 oz black beans
- 1 cup italian breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup white onion grated
- 1 whole egg
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- Salt and pepper
- Ranch House Cheeky Chilli Peri Peri Sauce
- 8 slices swiss cheese
- Oil
- Butter
- 4 whole hamburger buns
- Mayonnaise
- Lettuce Or Other Greens
- Sliced Tomato
- 1 red onion
Instructions
-
Drain, but do not rinse, the black beans. Place them in a bowl and use a fork to mash them. Keep mashing until they're mostly broken up, but still have some whole beans visible. Add the breadcrumbs, onion, egg, chili powder, salt, pepper, and peri peri sauce. Stir until everything is combined, then let the mixture sit for 5 minutes.
-
Heat a tablespoon or two of olive oil with an equal amount of butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Form the bean mixture into patties.
-
Place the patties in the skillet and cook them about 5 minutes on the first side. Flip them to the other side, place 2 slices of cheese onto each patty, and continue cooking them for another 5 minutes, or until the burgers are heated through.
-
Grill the buns on a griddle with a little butter until golden. Spread the buns with mayonnaise and hot sauce, then place the patties on the buns. Top with lettuce, onion and tomato, then pop on the lids!
