A couple of weeks ago was my birthday and I made a cake for myself, I had some cake leftover and I did not want to throw it out. I saw some cake pops on Pinterest and decided to use my leftover cake that way. It was also an opportunity to learn a new skill.
They are not quite as easy as I thought it would be. It takes a lot of time and there are many repeated steps. I enjoyed learning how to make them though.
Instructions
You will need
- 3 cups of cake
- ⅓ cup frosting
- approximately 20 cake pop sticks or dowels
- 1-12oz bag of chocolate chips or candy melts
- sprinkles (optional)
If you are starting from scratch then you will need to make the cake first, I used the chocolate cake recipe and then crumble it.
To mold the cake you then add frosting. The frosting can be made from scratch or store bought. Add a little at a time until the dough is firm. Put in the fridge for about four hours to firm up.
Melt chocolate melts and dip the stick, this will be the glue for the sticks.
Dip the cake pops in the melted chocolate and add the sprinkles. Do not use hot chocolate otherwise as it dries it will contract and crack. That physics lesson sure will come in handy at this. I had meant to take pictures of dipping the cakes pops into the chocolate but its difficult with my son trying to “help”. Which also made my pops less rounded but turned ok in the end.
If you use sprinkles remember to add them sparingly, they add weight to the pop and can end up sliding off the stick.
This will be fun to do with kids though it might get mess.
