When we were growing up we used to tell each other that if you had dandruff it meant your hair was growing. I have no idea who came up with that, it just sounds so ridiculous. I must confess whenever someone said to me, “Ende musoro wako unemakwene, saka bvudzi rako rinokura(Your hair has so much dandruff, it means your hair grows really fast)”, it made me happy. It was nothing to be ashamed of, just a fact of life.
I get dandruff especially when I have a protective style. I hate the scratching and the flakes that come with it. Mostly the scratching. I now know, thankfully, that dandruff has nothing to do with hair growth but the health of my scalp and me generally. I do try to keep on top of it but I slack sometimes. I have tried many things, which in the past meant mostly kukwenura (using a comb to remove the dandruff flakes), which does not really last as the problem still exists. Fungus.
Dandruff is caused by a fungal infection, there it actually need to be treated, removing the flakes ill not remove the fungus so the problem will not go away. I do not like going to the doctor so I looked for some home remedies and I am going to share with you the ones that worked for me.
Apple Cider Vinegar
The vinegar is able to kill scalp fungus and bacteria. I mix the vinegar with water in a 1:8 ratio, spritz my scalp with it before shampooing it. It has really improved the appearance of my scalp.
Coconut Oil
I love coconut oil mainly for its versatility. You can use it for virtually anything in my opinion. It has antifungal properties and it is a great moisturizer. You can use it as a pre-poo, add some lemon juice before applying it to your scalp. Also use it as a moisturizer for your hair. It will help relieve the itchiness and flakes.
Olive Oil
Olive oil moisturizer the dry areas of the scalp and prevents them from flaking and can soak into the thick and scaly areas of the scalp that cause continuous dandruff issues. Warm the oil and massage the scalp with a few drops before washing your hair. If you can leave it overnight.
Tea tree Oil
I love tea tree oil for my hair and my face. It helps me clear my acne and when I add it to my shampoo it really does get rid of the dandruff and itching.
Baking Soda
Baking soda kills fungus and gently exfoliates the scalp of excess dead skin. Mix 2 tablespoons with 2 cups warm water and use it to scrub your scalp before shampooing your hair.
