Simple skirt with Simplicity Pattern

alt

I am so excited just got my machine and last night went right to work. I made a skirt, the first thing to be made using my machine. So, so excited about it. It brought memories of doing fashion and fabrics when I was in form 1 and 2 (the first two years of high school in Zimbabwe). Funny thing is I hated it, did what I had to just to get through the class and pass it.I think it was because the teacher was not very nice, home economics teachers have a way of making you say ughh!! when you are in high school. None the less last night I was so glad I did that subject, it all just came back.

Earlier yesterday I picked out this pattern to make a simple skirt.

When we were in high school there would be one pattern for the class and we would all have to trace it onto khaki paper. I think we used a tracing wheel for it. I am glad I did not have to do that. I just cut along the pattern, pinned it to the fabric and cut the pieces. I just remembered what all those markings mean.

Then I realized that I did not have the tailors chalk that I needed for the markings, was I ever thankful for Mrs Mudhihlwa(my Fashion and Fabrics teacher) because she taught us how to put markings using tacking thread. I just remembered it, this is something I last did January or February 1997 but I have no idea what those are called. This is what it looked like:

The problem with the way I did it is that I used thread that is almost the same colour as the fabric that I used. But it worked out just fine.

I had problems understanding the pattern instructions but I eventually got the hang of it and I must say I am happy with the way the skirt came out and am going to wear it today!! Yeah!!
