When I was growing up there two snacks that were really close to my heart mutetenerwa (salted roasted peanuts)and store bought maputi (this is regular corn that is popped – best way I can describe it) and of course my drink of choice Mazoe Raspberry. I really did not care for the home made maputi(roasted corn), for one it is so hard to chew and I guess I just didn’t like them.
I had no plan of making maputi yesterday, it was by accident. I was making mangai and burnt the corn/maize, don”t even remember what I was doing at the time. I mean making mangai or anything that takes a long time to cook I tend to forget and occupy myself with other more interesting things – like TV!! Anyway as I was scrapping off the burnt corn I realized it wasn’t too burn and decided to make maputi with it. Here is how you make them:
Ingredients
- 1 cup corn (if the corn is too dry you may soak it overnight)
- salt to taste
Method
Now for roasting corn, peanuts or any other dry seeds I would suggest you don”t use your favourite skillet. If you have opted to soak your corn, drain the water and dry roast the corn until it is browned all over. Dissolve the salt in about two tablespoons of water and add it to your corn, be careful not to scald yourself with the steam. Continue roasting the corn until it is dry. At this stage it will look like this:
Serve warm.

Hi Tafadzwa. You can bring maputi to Australia and nzungu so long they are roasted, balanced or cooked. You just can’t bring raw peanuts or raw corn. I know because I bring some when I come from home. I loved the cooked dried peanuts. Please check the food restrictions list. I always get my mum to kanga mhandire so that it is roasted when it gets to Australia. When they get dry I just resoak them in water overnight and roast them again. Trust me they taste as good as they do when she initially made them
Hay Cleo whereabouts you live in Australia?
