On Sabbath, one of the members on the praise team had a poncho and I really liked it. After sunset I decided to create a knock off. It is perfect for when you have to cover yourself up like at church going to meet in-laws or as a beach cover up. I used really lightweight knit print I found in the remnants bin at the local fabric store.
What you will need:
2 yards of stretch fabric
Matching thread
Sewing machine or hand sewing needle
Instructions:
Cut 2 rectangles of the fabric measuring 40 inches by 20 inches, make sure the fabric stretches sideways.
This diagram shows how you sew the poncho.
Step 1 – Sew one the shorter sides right side facing.
Step 2 – Hem the lower edge using your preferred method for knit fabric.
Step 3 – Sew the upper edge for 35 inches – this is I what I used for my own measurements so you can make the opening bigger or smaller.
Step 4 – Hem the upper edge.
Step 5 – Hem the side edge of the poncho.
Note You can also use a lace edge fabric so you may not need to hem the lower edge.
Trim away ll the threads and you are finished.
