Upcycle a man’s shirt into a girl’s dress tutorial

Something peculiar has been happening to my husband’s shirts, they tear at the elbow. He does not seem to know what happens. The tear is not big but big enough to be noticeable and its the kind of tear that you can not fix well you can fix it but it will be a noticeable fix. In the winter he can put on a sweater and no one would notice but now that it is summer, it is too hot for a sweater.

We never throw away clothes we usually pass  them on to someone else but you do not want to give someone a shirt or dress that is torn. It may feel like that is why you are giving it to them. So I saw this dress that was made from a man’s shirt and it had sleeves and all, but sometimes I am just plain lazy so I take the quickest route there. I figure I could make a dress like a pillowcase dress I have made before and it worked. You can even make a dress big enough for an adult if you use an oversize shirt.

Here is what you will need for this dress:

Man’s shirt

Sewing thread

Ribbon

Sewing machine or needle

Instructions:

Cut away the sleeves of the shirt.

Cut away the collar just below the first button

Make a narrow hem on the sleeve.

Fold over the top part of the shirt to make a casing of about  1 inch and stitch in place

Cut the ribbon in two, to keep it from raveling secure it with an open flame but remember that ribbon is highly flammable.

Pull the ribbon through the casings and tie into a bow. If you don’t have ribbon use the sleeves to make tie bands and you are finished.

If I find time I will do this to the rest of the shirts. Its pretty easy. If you make this dress leave a link below, I would like to see what you come up with.
