We live in a world where people are always asking what is in it for me. Most people do not want to do something for free unless they know for certain that they will benefit at the end. There is no guarantee that if you help someone they will appreciate it or help you when you need it. In rural Zimbabwe, people come together often to help each other in their fields, referred to as humwe. They also come together to help build schools, clinics and churches. There is a higher sense of community than in urban areas when each person looks out for themselves.
Volunteer work is as beneficial to the person receiving it as much as it is to the person doing it. In my personal experience here is why:
1. You learn new skills that are outside of your everyday work. These are usually skills that you will never learn at school.
2. I am a housewife and it gets boring being at hime the whole time, so when I volunteer I get out of the house and talk to other people.
3. You volunteer because you want to and not because you have to, the work is more enjoyable. Its fun to do. You still have to deliver but there is no pressure.
4. It makes the community you live in a better place.
5. It makes you feel good about yourself; it boosts your confidence. I feel good if I help someone else.
6. You meet new people and make new networks and friendships.
If you would like to volunteer, look for opportunities at your church, nearby schools, clinics, hospitals or schools. Depending on where you are you may actually find volunteer work posted online. In Zimbabwe you can find information here.
